Day 2: Inverness & Loch Ness
This morning head to Inverness, The Capital of the Highlands. This compact city is flat and easy to explore on foot, from the lovely River Ness which splits Inverness into 2 areas on the north side historic Inverness Castle, the centre & the busy Victorian Market. On the south side there is a lovely riverside walk & St. Andrews Cathedral. Approx. 8 miles away is Loch Ness, we stop at the head of the Loch (there is a coach park), for photo opportunities and to take in the vastness of the loch , which is 23 miles long and as deep as the mountains are high. On return take the circular route to Nairn before turning south with wall to wall scenery all the way back to Grantown.
Day 3: Whisky Trail & Moray Coastline
Today we visit the world famous 39 mile Malt Whisky Trail. The area is home to almost half of the 100 or so malt whisky distilleries in Scotland. Along the side of the fast flowing salmon filled River Spey, passing woodlands, heather rich glens and Whisky distilleries, where if you wish you can stop for a tour & sample. On reaching Nairn the Moray Firth comes into view. Nairn has a glorious beach and from here you can quite often see the resident pod of dolphins. Continue the coastal drive to Elgin, where we stop to view its Cathedral before returning to Grantown on Spey.
Day 4: Aviemore & the Spey Valley
A half day tour takes in the natural landscapes of the Spey Valley. An area inhabited by ospreys, eagles and the elusive wildcat. Taking the leisurely drive we stop for a short while in Aviemore, before taking the country roads towards Nethy Bridge, where we stop at Loch Garten Nature Reserve, famous for being the ancestral home to the UK’s ospreys. The area is a protected green space surrounded by the largest remnant of ancient Caledonian pine forest. Take a walk through the forest to work up an appetite for an afternoon tea which has been arranged for you in Nethy Bridge.
